December Greetings!
It was a great fall for us and we have so much nice produce stored to nibble away at all winter long. Apples are really outstanding including lots of bushels of Yorks, and Goldrush—which actually get better toward Christmas time than they were when picked. Butternut squash is stored away in our new squash storage room so it should be better than ever. The golden ball turnips are scrumptious--beautiful yellow turnips with much nicer texture and turnip flavor than the white hakurei. Cabbage, red and green, daikon radishes, beets, carrots…sauerkraut...a great stash. And there’s lots of beautiful fresh greens in two greenhouses, spinach, cress, and kale in the fields yet...
We are planning “winter” veggie deliveries for Wednesdays 12/8 and 12/15 and also Thursdays 12/9 and 12/16. The routine is different than the summer boxes in that you may opt in or out of the box each time we offer them.
We’ll have dropoffs Wednesdays in Wexford, McKnight-Passavant, Bloomfield/Friendship, the
Here’s a list of what
we plan to have in the boxes for 12/8-9:
A nice size bag mesclun salad greens from the greenhouse and field, 4# apples (York and Goldrush), 4# red potatoes, 1.5# carrots, 1 large green cabbage, 2 # beets, 2 butternut squash, daikon radish, 1 bunch parsley, mixed herbs, 1.5# golden ball turnips, garlic, field cress, large bag of kale.

The cost is $50/box. If anything changes, we’ll increase other items or figure a reduced price. These are larger amounts of many items than your usual in-season box (many are double sized bags). Most everything except the greens should store well even without refrigeration for quite a time.
We also have several items on hand which you can add to the box: Coffee, Nicaraguan fair trade @ $10/lb. (ground and whole bean); Cheeses--goats' milk feta @ $6/half pound, organic raw milk cheddar @$6.50/half #, lesher @ 7.50 half#, and blue @$5/quarter#, swiss @$ $7/half#, Cheese CSA--3 cheese varieties (approx. 2#) @$26. Apple butter--3.50/pint $40/12 (This is made by Sally & Tom Davis of Sally’s Cider Press from apples, and boiled down cider--healthful, seasonal, and great on toast... Also a great natural holiday gift or addition for a shared meal.)
You must confirm if you want this winter delivery by 12/4 or 12/11 depending for which week. E-mail (best) or phone is fine. We’ll get back to you with confirmation and the pickup spot so check your e-mail the Monday prior to pickup. The pickup day and place will likely be different from your normal one during the summer. The number of boxes is limited so, first come, first served.
The next winter box we are penciling in is for 1/13/09 when we'll have lots more kraut, frozen cider, roots, apples, etc.
Critical to these winter boxes are dropoff points. We don’t have any prearranged ones like we do in the summer. Nor are they permanent ones. You needn’t host for more than the one week. If you’ve got a suitable sheltered place for delivering the winter boxes—like a porch or garage—please consider volunteering to host a delivery.
Hope all is clear. Thanks for all.

P.S. Chris and Darla, two neighbors who work with us on the farm will be making 10 in. Christmas wreaths out of long strands of our rosemary. It is beautiful, aromatic, and even edible. Great for hanging in the kitchen. If you are interested, we can bring one with your box. Cost is $20.
