Winter Boxes 2016-2017
Plus--Special Holiday Box Dec. 14 or Dec. 21
An amazing variety of local produce is available for a good bit of late fall and early winter from our western Pennsylvania farm--specially between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays (when one really wants to enjoy the fresh bounty)! There's a remarkable variety (often more than at the beginning of the summer season)--veggies from the summer which store very well--root crops like potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips; also winter squash, onions, cabbage, garlic, onions, herbs, honey, cider, and apples. We usually have kale until about Christmas, and a small quantity of fresh greens from the greenhouse.
Quantities are larger because things store well for the longer time between deliveries. This year, we'll also have tomato sauce and salsa which we had processed from our abundant 2016 tomato crop.
There are two ways to order winter boxes:
1) Standard winter season of 5 boxes. (W & W2) Delivery on Nov. 30/Dec. 1, Dec. 14/15*, Jan. 4/5, Jan. 18/19, Feb. 15/16. This includes one Special Holiday Box. Standard winter season: $200.
2. Special Holiday Box Only--to be delivered on your choice of Dec. 14 or Dec. 21--cost $45. You can share the local harvest with friends over the holidays.
Here's what we expect to have in the holiday boxes, if weather doesn't change things (differences noted in red):
Dec. 14 plan (H &W shares): 3# potatoes, 4# butternut squash--one large or two smaller, ½ gal. organic apple cider, 2 bunches kale, 2# carrots, small bag mesclun mix, lettuce, mixed “winter” herbs, garlic, 2# formanova beets (gourmet heirloom, long, deep red, sweet variety), large cabbage.
Dec. 21 plan (H2 &W2 shares): 3# potatoes, 4# butternut squash--one large or two smaller, ½ gal. organic apple cider, 2 bunches kale, 2# carrots, small bag mesclun mix, lettuce, mixed “winter” herbs, large sweet onion, 1-litre bloody mary mix (great as a breakfast drink too!)**, pint mild salsa**.
We expect to deliver to East End, Lawrenceville, Squirrel Hill, Mt. Lebanon, McKnight area, Beechwood, Northside, Sewickley, and anywhere there are enough subscribers to warrant a stop. If interested, please e-mail with "winter share" in the subject line, and send on a $100 deposit. If you are a 2016 CSA member, you needn't send a new signup form. If you are new, please send on the signup form with the basic information and note it's for the winter csa or just the holiday box.
*This box is the Holiday Box which you can optionally choose to have delivered on Dec. 21/22.
**Made from our own organic tomatoes, onions, peppers, and herbs--canned professionally.
